There are two major pipelines threatening the Eastern Shore. These proposed pipelines would connect to bring fracked gas from Delaware down through Maryland, threatening the region’s ecosystems and drinking water supplies, and causing irreparable damage to the land and our climate.

Please stand with communities on the Eastern Shore and urge the Maryland Department of Environment to recommend a denial of the wetlands and waterways permit for the Eastern Shore Pipeline.

Dear Mary Phipps-Dickerson,

I am writing to express my opposition to the Chesapeake Utilities Project and urge you to recommend denial of the project’s Wetlands License.

The Chesapeake Utilities Project is one of two pipelines proposed for the Eastern Shore. The first is the Del-Mar pipeline,  which would bring gas down the shore from Delaware. This one, the Chesapeake Utilities Project, would connect to the Del-Mar pipeline and bring fracked gas across the shore to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Eastern Correctional Institution in Somerset County. It poses a significant threat to the region’s ecosystems and drinking water supplies and will cause irreparable damage to the land and our climate.

The excavation methods necessary for the pipeline’s construction will use significant amounts of water; cause sediment to build up in the streams and wetlands, and has the potential for a "blowout" that releases drilling mud into the stream.

We know that the Eastern Shore, which is essentially surrounded by water, is ground zero for climate change in Maryland. We also know that the expansion of dangerous gas infrastructure like this is a major step in the wrong direction. Importing fracked gas runs counter to MD’s commitment to climate action.

Beyond that, recent events show that the fracked-gas industry is a gamble at best. Companies behind the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline canceled the project due to ballooning costs and legal uncertainties. And the Dakota Access pipeline was ordered to shut down for an environmental review.  Meanwhile, in late June, the fracking giant Chesapeake Energy filed for bankruptcy. These setbacks for the industry demonstrate that fracking is a risky investment, for the climate, the environment, and the economy.

The actions and decisions we make in this decade will impact Marylanders and climate for generations to come. We do not have the luxury of making bad ones. I strongly urge MDE to recommend denial of the wetland permit for the Chesapeake Utilities Project.
