To Members of the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors:
We would like to express our outrage and dissatisfaction with Dominion Energy's proposal to build a new fracked gas plant in Chesterfield.
This is nothing short of unconscionable in a state legally bound to move to 100% clean energy, in a country where solar is the cheapest energy source, and at a time when wildfires, tornados, and hurricanes are wreaking havoc across North America. It also flies in the face of Dominion’s legal obligation to achieve 100% clean energy by 2045. This new plant is destined to be an expensive stranded asset that will only raise our bills -- and probably operate less than 2% of the time. After all, the nearby Darbytown peaker only operates 1.6% of the time. This plant is not needed.
Dominion's Chesterfield fracker would be the biggest gas peaker plant in Virginia, and produce sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOX), particulate matter (PM), carbon dioxide (CO2), mercury (Hg), and other pollutants. Instead of spending between $600 million and $1 billion dollars on a massive stranded asset, Dominion could invest in energy efficiency. An equivalent investment in energy efficiency in Chesterfield would create 9,000 to 15,000 jobs -- compared to just 36 for this plant -- and actually lower our energy bills.
Please reject all permits requested by Dominion for this expensive, polluting proposal.
Signed,
