Energy bills in D.C. are going up. From D.C.’s monopoly utilities to our regional electric grid operator PJM, multi-million dollar companies are calling the shots on the cost to power our homes. And what do Pepco and Washington Gas do with all that money? Well right now, it’s hard to say! Right now, DC law allows utilities to spend ratepayer funds – AKA your money – lobbying and filing lawsuits against the District’s climate commitments and clean energy programs. Meanwhile, these for-profit corporations continue massively overbudget infrastructure programs, like Project Pipes, that will drive up your gas bills for decades. But it doesn’t have to be this way!

D.C. residents can’t afford to have our utilities contributing to the affordability OR climate crises. That’s why I support:

• Establishing commonsense ratepayer protections that ensure the money I spend on utility bills doesn’t go to promoting the interests of monopoly utility companies.
• Ending Washington Gas’s massively expensive Project Pipes AKA District SAFE for good, and focusing on cost effective repair instead of accelerated pipeline replacement.
• Piloting networked geothermal  (AKA delivering heat (“thermal”) from the ground (“geo”) to heat a building using a heat pump) in the District as an alternative to fossil fuels.
