Dear City Council:
We are submitting this petition to ask that you dedicate a larger portion of the budget to sidewalk management in critical areas of Richmond for the benefit of Richmond's pedestrians and VCU students.
Many of the sidewalks around VCU are severely damaged or otherwise inaccessible. Not only will this help pedestrians, particularly those with disabilities, but bikers and skaters as well. According to Richmond Magazine, pedestrian deaths have increased by 77% between 2010 and 2021. Better sidewalks mean fewer people have to step or roll onto the road to get where they need to go, reducing the risk of accidents. Fixing sidewalks will help everyone in Richmond.
Additionally, many residential areas in Richmond lack sidewalks altogether. It is imperative that residential regions have walkable sidewalks so people can safely get where they need to go. With more than 2,200 unresolved sidewalk repair requests dating back to 2017, the residents of Richmond call on the city to address the dire sidewalk infrastructure issue we face every single day.
